When choosing an LED driver, the most critical electrical parameter to understand is whether your application requires a Constant Current (CC) or a Constant Voltage (CV) driver.
1. Constant Current LED Drivers
Constant Current drivers are designed for a designated range of output voltages and a fixed output current (e.g. 700mA or 950mA). These drivers are widely used for individual high power LED fixtures because they regulate the current directly, preventing thermal runaway and ensuring stable light output.
2. Constant Voltage LED Drivers
Constant Voltage drivers deliver a fixed output voltage (typically 12V or 24V DC) with a variable current depending on the load. These drivers are the industry standard for flexible LED strip lights, cabinet lights, and modular light bars that already have built-in current regulating resistors on the circuit board.
Using the wrong driver type will lead to instant component failure or dim, flickering lights. Always cross-check the wattage and current requirements of your luminaires before powering them up.
